Children in the Holocaust
“Even in darkness it is possible to find light.” -Elie Wiesel
Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel states in the quote above that even when you think there is no hope left you can always find it, you just have to believe it’s there. Children in the Holocaust, like Elie, endured miserable conditions including starvation and death. During WWII, the Jewish population and other minorities, including children were singled out because of their religion and beliefs and then were killed in mass amounts by Adolph Hitler and his Nazi Army. This tragic event took the freedoms and lives of innocent people and it should never happen again.
The Holocaust included many people. Adolph Hitler was one of the main people during this time. There was also his Nazi army. They killed millions of Jews, because of the hatred of Hitler towards Jews(5). Jews were killed and abused because of their beliefs. Even children were mistreated and killed, some of them were not even Jewish(4). Schools in the Holocaust were small and cramped(7). On November 15th, 1938 all Jewish children were not allowed to go to any non-Jewish schools anymore(4). They could only go to all Jewish schools which were in horrible condition(7). They had to worry everyday that their school would be attacked by the Nazis. Almost all the schools were attacked and unfixable(4). Jobs for Jewish people were horrible. They were banned from professional jobs. Some of them included: teaching Germans, accountants, dentists, and they were not allowed tax reductions. They could not make any money and they were surviving off the little they made. They were also not allowed to pay their children an allowance(7). Throughout the first years of the Holocaust, people didn't have the same rights as other people, they were killed and treated like anything besides human.
The Holocaust was time when mass amounts of Jews including children were killed. Hitler and his Nazi army came after the Jews and tried to wipe them out completely. They starved people and made them go and go and go until they couldn't anymore. The Nazi’s killed innocent people because Hitler hated Jews. Many of the Jews that couldn’t work in the concentration camps were killed right away, when they arrived. most of the children were either shot or killed because most of them were too young to work(4). Children were mistreated too. They were starved, beaten, shot and killed, killed in gas chambers, and most of them didn’t know what was going on because they were too young to understand. They couldn’t go to German schools and the Jewish schools were destroyed from the Nazi’s. There was a constant fear of going to school because they didn’t know if they were going to be attacked(4). Hitler and his army established multiple concentration camps during this time. There was Chelmno, it was the first killing center, it opened in December of 1941. Auschwitz was one of the first camps to get gas chambers. Auschwitz was one of the most popular killing centers because the gas chambers could hold thousands. When Auschwitz finally closed there was an estimation of about 1.1 million Jews were murdered there(3). So many innocent Jews including children and other minorities were killed for what they believed in, this was a very heartbreaking time in our past.
The Holocaust was a Social Injustice. People were murdered in mass amounts and they were treated like animals just because of their beliefs(4). They were singled out and know one wanted to talk to them and they were abused by German children and older Germans as well(4). They were put into cattle trains and brought to concentration camps where they were either killed or put to work(4). They were treated very poorly and they should have had the same rights as any other person(4). When the agony was over, the concentration camps were evacuated and the Jews were sent free(7).
When the Holocaust was starting to come to an end. Russians were starting to free Jews from concentration camps. The Russians freed a total of about 88,000 Jews from concentration camps. Nazi’s freed about 66,000 Jews from Auschwitz. By then over 2,000,000 people including 1,500,000 Jews were murdered at Auschwitz. Hitler also committed suicide along with many other leaders following him kill themselves too to avoid death or prison(7). There was many survivors too. Some of them included Krystyna Chiger, Pawel Chiger, Lili Silberman, Charles Silberman, Willy Bloch, Alex Groth, Alfred Ament, Augusta Feldhorn, and one of the most talked about girls from the Holocaust, Anne Frank(2). There were only a few survivors that went through all the hardships of the Holocaust including starvation, I have come up with a plan to help.
To help with the starvation of people in Racine, I have come up with a plan to help them get back to full strength. I plan to start a food drive in Yorkville school. I would put out food barrels in and around Yorkville. People could come and fill the barrels with non-perishable foods. For 2 weeks in February I plan to put out food donation barrels around Yorkville Elementary School. I would need the help of my classmates and maybe some friends to help me make posters to tell people about the drive. I want to help hungry people in my area because I’ve learned so much over the last few weeks about how terrible Jewish children and other minorities were starved to death. If I can help people around me that are starving, or that are in need of a warm meal, I would definitely try to do something to help. Using the barrels to collect non-perishable food from my school, I will make the day of a few hungry people.
After the 2 weeks are over I will donate all the food to the Racine County Food Bank. I want to donate food to that organization because I feel like they really help out people that are in need of food. I would ask one of my teachers or maybe a few of them to volunteer to take the food to the Racine County Food Bank. That way they can feel like they can help out the community too. I would make a big thank you card and hang it above the stairs to thank the school for all their help. After the whole thing is over I would take down all the posters and thank everybody for all their help.
The Holocaust was a tragic event in history where innocent people lost their lives including children. During WWII, the Jewish population and other minorities, including children were singled out because of their religion and beliefs and then were killed in mass amounts by Adolph Hitler and his Nazi Army. This tragic event took the freedoms and lives of innocent people. I believe that every human being should have the right to believe in whatever they want, and it is important to not be judged or killed based on any body’s religion. When times are hard remember that you always have to fight and never give up.
